Critical Thinking

Audience:

The key theories:
There's two types of audiences:
Passive - people who are easily manipulated and just an observer of a piece of media. They consume media at face value and rarely, if ever, explore the same media in different forms, e.g. they watch Doctor Who but they don't get any of the merchandise or go to any conventions.
Active - people who aren't easily manipulated and gets active with the media, eg gets the merchandise of a show.

Applications:
People who watch more horror have a less of a reaction than people who watch them less.

Narrative:
Narrative is the story behind the a film/tv show/book.

The key theories:
Todorov's theory talks about all narratives following the same 3-part structure:

  • Equilibrium
  • Destruction of equilibrium
  • Restoring to new equilibrium

Application:
In Shaun of the Dead, the world appears like it does day to day. Then over time, more and more zombies rise up in the population. The military sorts out the zombies at the end.

Our presentation:

In our presentation, we talked about the three main theories in narrative from Todorov, Prop and Strauss with examples of each theory. This is help me to understand these theories more in depth than I would have before. This is good for this project because it gives me three different routes to explore in my essay within just one aspect of media.

Auteur:

The key theories:
The director is the major creative force and how they interpret a source to create their own distinct style of film.

Applications:
Steven Spielberg would be an auteur as he has many recognizable features throughout his films to tell stories in his own way. This ranges from the dinosaur revel shot in the original Jurassic Park to the classic dolly zoom Jaws.

Genre:
Genre is defined as a style or a way of a media, eg rap.

The key theories:
Genre has similarities (e.g. space in Sci-Fi) and differences (e.g. characters in Sci-fi)

Applications:
Shaun of the Dead and The Walking Dead both have zombies but have different main characters and Shaun of the Dead followed a route of going to a pub with little weapons instead of going to highly fortified places.

Gender and Representations:
Gender and Representations is about how gender and groups of people are shown within a media piece.
The key theories:
How groups like males, females and race are presented by the media. This is to conform them to stereotypes, for example men being tough and women being soft.  However, this is changing, especially between men and women roles becoming more identical.

Applications:
In Shrek, Shrek (presumed male) is shown as the hero saving the princess Fiona (presumed female).

After going into each of these theories, I have chosen to explore gender and representation theory in the form of the question "Is LGBT representation in Television and Film getting worse?". This theory has helped to developed my question by  giving me at least one direct link between the theory and LGBT: transgender and how they are representative. This direct link is a good talking point because it allows me to talk about one of the main sub-groups of LGBT in both terms of gender and how transgender individuals are represented.

The theory has helped to create my title for my essay by giving me something to compare and contrast to; the representation of LGBT across a period of time. The title I got straight off the bat from this was "Is Representation of LGBT Getting Better?" but after doing research of some statistics, there were a lot of statistics that showed the it was getting worse. So I decided to keep the question but flip it on it's head.

notes:
-how theories have effected question
-put slides  as jpegs on page
- 3 paragraph (which theories, how it relates to LGBT and how the question came about)
